HISTORY OF FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

MIAMI, OKLAHOMA

A group of 27 men and women met in the Friends Meeting House in March, 1899, to form the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Miami, Indian Territory.   Property was bought at Central and “B” SW on which was constructed a wooden church referred to fondly in later years as the “Little White Church.”  In 1906 because of a church union, the

Miami church became a part of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.   One of the early ministers was the Reverend John C. Linton, a native of Scotland.   Music has always been important in the Miami church.   In the early days there was a Presbyterian Ladies’ Quartet which performed at many churches and community events.

The congregation grew steadily and by the early 1920's the “Little White Church” was too small.   The Reverend Harry Curtis was called with the idea that he would lead the congregation in building a new church.   Not only did he see the church completed, he was the minister of the church and an asset to the entire community for 35 years.

A beautiful brick church with exquisite stained glass windows was dedicated in 1926 in the same location.

The women of the church had many money raising projects to raise money for the building fund, for the lovely pipe organ, and all that was needed for dinners in the fellowship room in the basement.

Members of the Presbyterian Church have always been active in the community.   The church has sponsored Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops.  Norse Campus Ministry met spiritual needs at Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College.   During World Was II, when the British Boys were training at Spartan Aviation School, the boys were welcomed into the church and into the homes of the members.

Through the years Christmas baskets have been given to families recommended by the Department of Human Services; support has been given to Soul’s Harbor (a shelter for the homeless); food and money have been given to the Ministerial Alliance Assistance Fund; and shoes have been purchased for children with that need. The biggest project for the community is the sponsorship of Curtis Plaza, an apartment complex, which provides good and well maintained affordable housing for low income families.

The church grew in membership dramatically in the 1950's.   There was not enough Sunday School room or space for church dinners.   In 1957 a wonderful Educational Building was built south of the 1926 church.

For the entire year preceding March of 1999 the Miami Presbyterian Church celebrated the centennial of its organization. There were special church dinners: Eastern Oklahoma Presbytery met here: and the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Reverend Charles Oldenburg, gave a special sermon from our pulpit.   The Centennial Year was a series of joyful occasions!   Our heritage was celebrated by recalling and in some cases reenacting events from earlier years.

In the summer of the same year it was the worst of times.   On July 3, the 1926 Church burned to a shell.   The congregation, in fact the entire community, was saddened by the loss. Worship services were held in Fellowship Hall following the fire until decisions could be made about rebuilding.

After much consideration the decision was made to acquire four acres in the northeast section of the city and start afresh with more space.   The Building Committee worked with the architect and builders for more than a year to see to completion our present church at 1400 Veteran’s Boulevard.

The Dedication was held in February of 2002 with The Reverend Greg Coulter, General Presbyter, delivering the sermon.   The Reverend John Wilson was our pastor during all of the relocation process.

We have much more information in our Archives.   Our committee would be happy to help you find answers to any question you may have concerning our Church and its activities.
