A SERVICE FOR THE LORD'S DAY
Pentecost June 12, 2011
WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD'S NAME
Prelude:
Greetings, Passing of the Peace of Christ, Announcements:
Introit:
*Call to Worship: Lay Leader
Leader:
Like the disciples, we come to life looking for answers. Like them, what we
find are questions. And so we ask and ask again for guidance.
People: Where do we burn? How do we keep our incendiary passion alive?
How do we ignite it in others?
Leader: We come together, walking barefoot toward flame. Trusting, we learn
to trust each other.
People: In community, we stumble over the questions and find the answers
that keep us walking.
*Hymn: "Let Every Christian Pray" No. 130
*Call to Confession: Lay Leader
Leader: Beloved, we are God’s children because of the love God has for us, yet we sometimes fail to respond to God’s outpouring of love. Let us confess our sins together.
*Prayer of Confession: (unison) Lay Leader
Great Spirit and eternal God, on this day of Pentecost, we confess we have not always been open and receptive of You. Your Spirit surrounds and empowers us, yet we are so very careful and cautious. Help us now, more than ever, to open our lives to your Holy Spirit and to live courageously. Amen.
*Silent Confession:
*Assurance of Pardon: Lay Leader
Leader: Through the power of the resurrected Christ, our sins are forgiven. Alleluia! Amen.
*Gloria Patri: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD
Time with Children:
Prayer of Illumination: (unison) Lay Leader
Holy Spirit, as the Scripture is read, open our hearts and minds to hear the truth; shine light where we cling to darkness; convict where there is need; and call forth from us the passion and joy to respond to your Word to us. Amen.
1st Scripture Lesson: Acts 2:1-21 Lay Leader

Prayers of the People:
Lord's Prayer: (unison)
“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but del iver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.”
Offertory:
*Doxology: Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
*Affirmation of Faith: (unison)
We
believe in God the Creator, the risen Christ and ever-present Spirit. We believe
God whirled fire and wind into a closed room to stir up the hesitant and cautious
disciples. We believe God still stirs things up, turns things upside down, sets
people on fire with inspiration and zeal.
We believe the Holy Spirit moves unexpectedly, creating opportunity, guiding
reconciliation, fostering community. The Holy Spirit will not be housebroken
or bound by narrow rules or closed minds or doors. The Holy Spirit is like wind
and fire, and we believe the church is most alive when we dare to cooperate
with the surprising, creating, loving Spirit of God.
*Hymn: "Spirit" No. 319
WE GO IN GOD'S NAME
*The Charge and Benediction:
*Congregational Response: "Because He Lives"
Because He lives I can face tomorrow; because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.
